Buch der Lieder German Edition eBook Heinrich Heine
One must give this an unqualified endorsement. Inasmuch as the book is free, who would not want it? On a linguistic level, Heine is easy to read; add to that the fact that he is supremely important in the history of German lyric poetry, not only for contributing some pieces--like "Die Lorelei"--central to the canon but also because (as even such detractors as Karl Kraus admit) he marks the beginning of a new phase in German poetry which eschews Goethean formality for an easy, more colloquial, familiarity.Product details

Buch der Lieder German Edition eBook Heinrich Heine Reviews
This book was first published in 1827 and is in the public domain, so you can find it for free as an e-book on several sites on the web. The printed edition has 119 pages. Heinrich Heine lived from 1797 till 1856. This 'Buch der Lieder' is among the first literary works he published.
This book contains lyric poems of the romantic area. These poems are still very popular. I will copy one poem from this book below so you can see whether you'll like this book or not. Most of the poems are short, like the one I copied, but some are a few pages long and tell a whole story. I recommend these 'Lieder' to anyone who likes to read German poetry.
LXXXVII
Der Tod, das ist die kühle Nacht,
Das Leben ist der schwüle Tag.
Es dunkelt schon, mich schläfert,
Der Tag hat mich müd gemacht.
Über mein Bett erhebt sich ein Baum,
Drin singt die junge Nachtigall;
Sie singt von lauter Liebe,
Ich hör es sogar im Traum.
I use it to practice and improve my service-connected German.
It has pretty much sat on the shelf, other projects taking precedence.
I learned one of his poems in German class as a kid. Great stuff!
My daughter loves these little yellow books because she plans on spending a while overseas and wants to take books with her. There are quite a few titles to choose from. Since she's traveling to Germany and is a German major, she stumbled upon these gems.
One must give this an unqualified endorsement. Inasmuch as the book is free, who would not want it? On a linguistic level, Heine is easy to read; add to that the fact that he is supremely important in the history of German lyric poetry, not only for contributing some pieces--like "Die Lorelei"--central to the canon but also because (as even such detractors as Karl Kraus admit) he marks the beginning of a new phase in German poetry which eschews Goethean formality for an easy, more colloquial, familiarity.
